Graduate in MSc Urology will be expected to augment the national need for specialists in urology, which will improve the roles expected of Tanzanian Consultant Hospitals in teaching, service, and research.
Objectives
To train a urologist who should be competent enough to work independently in a Regional or District Hospital.
To organize urological programmes for a Region, supervise and teach AMO’s (urology), and conduct independent field surveys.
To acquire knowledge, skills, attitude, and ethics associated with the profession of a urologist.
Educational programme
MSc training programmes shall be organized to provide a stable, well-coordinated, and progressive educational experience for the trainee, rather than simply provide health care to patients. The programme includes
- Basic and clinical sciences
- Research
- Clinical experience
- Clinical conferences
- Case presentations
- Dissertation
- Pathology
Where appropriate and desirable, clinical and teaching activities may be undertaken partly in institutions other than KCMU-College.
Curriculum for MSc in Urology
The trainee will gain a holistic approach to the patient, recognizing him as deserving health and life-preserving medical treatment that constitutes excellence in urological care. Knowledge and technical skill to assure competent urological diagnosis and management will be met by the following methods:
- Bedside teaching grounds daily with attending staff, intern, and nursing staff.
- Supervised operating theater experience providing an opportunity to develop technical skills through:
- didactic presentations
- Lectures on specific subjects
- Case studies
- Video presentations
- Morbidity/mortality conferences
- Computer-based learning
Part I Examination
- Candidates shall before admission to the Part I examination, have completed a year of study in the prescribed subjects. At the end of Year 1 there will be University examinations, consisting of a written and an oral/practical part, which the student must pass in order to proceed further with the course. Candidates must attain an aggregate mark of at least 50% to pass the Part I examination.
- Continuous assessment marks shall be included in the final assessment. Equal weighting will be given to coursework and the final examination.
- A candidate who fails some subjects of the Part I examination shall be allowed to proceed to the second year but will have to sit a supplementary examination in six months’ time. Failing the supplementary examination will lead to the discontinuation of the course.
Part II Examination
- Candidates shall, before admission to the Part II (Final) Examination, have submitted an acceptable dissertation.
- Part II examinations shall be held at the end of the second year and shall consist of written papers, clinical/practicals, and orals. The written examination shall carry 40% of the marks and the clinical/practical/oral examination shall carry 60%. Candidates must pass both components.
- A candidate who fails the Part-II Examination shall be allowed to appear for a supplementary examination after six months or one year as the Faculty Board may determine. A further supplementary examination may be allowed, provided the candidate’s period of MSc registration does not exceed three years.
- Dissertation assessment.
Degree award
A candidate who fulfills the above conditions shall be awarded the degree of Master of Science (Urology) of Tumaini University Makumira, KCMU College.
